A loud crack of thunder woke Maresa later that night.
Knifing upright in bed, she saw that the French doors in the master bedroom had been closed. Rain pelted the glass outside while streaks of lightning illuminated the empty spot in the king-size bed beside her. Reaching a hand to touch the indent on the other pillow, she felt the warmth of Cameron McNeill’s body. The subtle scent of him lingered on her skin, her body aching pleasantly from sex on the chaise longue before a private catered dinner they’d eaten in bed instead of on the patio. Then, there’d been the heated lovemaking in the shower afterward.
And again in the bed before falling asleep in a tangle just a few hours ago. It was after midnight, she remembered. Close to morning.
Isla.
Her gaze darted to the nursery monitor that she’d placed on the nightstand, but it was missing. Cameron must have it, she thought, and be with the baby. But it bothered her that the little girl hadn’t been the first thought in her head when she’d opened her eyes.
Dragging Cam’s discarded T-shirt from the side of the bed, she pulled it over her head. The hem fell almost to her knees. She hurried out of the master bedroom across the hall to the second room where the hotel staff had brought in a portable crib. There, in a window seat looking out on the storm, lounged Cameron McNeill, cradling tiny Isla against his bare chest.
The little girl’s arms reached up toward his face, her uncoordinated fingers flexing and stretching while her eyes tracked him. He spoke to her softly, his lips moving. No. He was singing, actually.
“Rain, rain, go away,” he crooned in a melodic tenor that would curl a woman’s toes. “Little Isla wants to play—” He stopped midsong when he spotted Maresa by the door. “Hey there. We tried not to wake you.”
Her emotions puddled into a giant, liquid mass of feelings too messy to identify. She knew that her heart was at risk because she’d just given this man her body. Of course, that was part of it. But the incredible night aside, she still would have felt her knees go weak to see this impossibly big, strong man cradling a baby girl in his arms so tenderly.
Not just any baby girl, either. This was Rafe’s beautiful daughter, given into Maresa’s care. Her heart turned over to hear Cameron singing to her.
“It was the storm that woke me, not you.” She dragged in a deep breath, trying to steady herself before venturing closer.
He propped one foot on the window seat bench, his knee bent. The other leg sprawled on the floor while his back rested against the casement.
“I gave her a bottle and burped her. I think I did that part all right.” He held up the little girl wrapped in a light cotton blanket so Maresa could see. “Not sure how I did on my swaddle job, though.”
Maresa smiled, stepping even nearer to take Isla from him.
